title: Chrome browser
description: Record ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot conversations from the browser.
---

**What it records.** Conversations on `chatgpt.com`, `claude.ai`, `gemini.google.com`, `perplexity.ai`, and `copilot.microsoft.com`: what the person typed, what the AI replied, the model, and the signed-in account email.

**How.** The Surface browser extension watches the web app's own traffic and hands each turn to the scanner on the same endpoint. It never sends anything to the internet by itself, asks for no browser permissions beyond the local scanner address, and shows **disconnected** when the scanner is not running.

Recording Chrome needs two things: the switch in Hub, and the browser extension on endpoints. The switch is on when your organization is created; the extension is not, so the browser records nothing until you push it.

## Before you begin

- You have the **Admin** role.
- You can push a Chrome policy through your MDM, or you are testing on one endpoint where you can run `surface` as an administrator.

## Set it up

1. **Confirm the switch in Hub**

Click **Hub** at the bottom of the left menu. Under **AI Tools**, the **Chrome browser** card already reads **Enabled**. If it reads **Configure**, someone turned it off: click the card and turn **Enabled** on.

2. **Install the browser extension on endpoints**

Through your MDM: see [Browser extension](/surface/deploy/mdm/browser-extension) for the force-install policy on each platform.

On one endpoint: `sudo surface extension install chrome`, which applies the same policy.

3. **Check**

The extension icon in Chrome shows **connected**. The next conversation on one of the four sites appears on the [Sessions](/surface/activity/session-trace) page.

## Firefox

The extension is also published for Firefox. Force-install it with your Firefox policy.

## Turn it off

Click the **Chrome browser** card in Hub and turn **Enabled** off. The browser extension stays installed but the scanner stops accepting sessions from it. Remove the force-install policy to uninstall it.

## Next steps

- [Session Trace](/surface/activity/session-trace) to open a Session Trace or Conversation
- [Amazon S3](/surface/hub/data-sources/s3) or [Splunk](/surface/hub/data-sources/splunk) to keep the data in your own storage
