Manual install

Download the package for your platform and install it yourself.

Use a manual install when you want to inspect the package first, install without internet access on the laptop, or script the install your own way.

Before you begin

  • Administrator rights on the laptop.
  • Access to the console Downloads page (any role).

Download the package

In the console, open Downloads and choose the Manual install tab. Pick the version and download the package for the platform.

Platform Package
macOS, Apple Silicon SuperAlign-surface-{version}-darwin-arm64.pkg
macOS, Intel SuperAlign-surface-{version}-darwin-amd64.pkg
Linux amd64 SuperAlign-surface-{version}-linux-amd64.deb or .rpm
Linux arm64 SuperAlign-surface-{version}-linux-arm64.deb or .rpm
Windows x64 SuperAlign-surface-{version}-windows-amd64.msi

Install it

sudo installer -pkg SuperAlign-surface-{version}-darwin-arm64.pkg -target /

The package must be installed on the system volume.

msiexec /i SuperAlign-surface-{version}-windows-amd64.msi /qn /norestart
sudo apt install ./SuperAlign-surface-{version}-linux-amd64.deb
sudo dnf install ./SuperAlign-surface-{version}-linux-amd64.rpm

Use dnf, not rpm -i, so dependencies are installed.

Enroll the laptop

The installer runs surface init for you. If no enrollment token is present, it opens the browser for a sign-in. On Windows this happens in a window titled Surface Scanner Login.

To enroll without a sign-in, place an enrollment token on the laptop first, as described under MDM deployment.

Verify

Run sudo surface status. The laptop appears on Endpoints within a few minutes.
